The Blacet MiniWave was delivered on Monday the 4th of January. But after connecting it to my MOTM cabinet on Tuesday evening there were some problems with the waves from the standard socket A which seemed distorted. Had several mail contact with John Blacet about this. And after that it appeared that the EPROM in socket A probably had a faulty contact. After that some calibration had to be performed because only half the waves were generated. But now it is working fine. The power connector in the MOTM cabinet was not problem because the Blacet uses the same power connector on the PCB. Still have to figure out what I am going to do to fit the it in the MOTM cabinet. Some pictures:

News 2009

27th December 2009
Bought a second hand Blacet MiniWave from an musician in America called Inverse Room. For some time I wanted to buy a MiniWave to explore it's possibilities. But the ModCan B version is just to expensive for me. So I grabbed to opportunity when I saw the add on the MatrixSynth website. It was build from the kit and has the Rocket Socket EPROM in socket B. It uses the +15V/-15V power supply so I should be able to plug it in my MOTM cabinets power cables.

Finished building the Music From Outer Space Dual VCA which I ordered from the BrideChamber. I did need some extra VCA's so now I have them. The behavior is like the Formant VCA I have; you have to open the gain to get output. On the Synthesizers.com VCA this is not necessary; you only have to feed a control voltage.

Thomas White is the one who made this possible by producing the schematics and the PCB. I bought the PCB, with most of the components already on it, second hand from someone in Belgium. The two Vactrols on it are VTL5C6, which are the fast type. I added the components for the mixer section and got the panel, pots, knobs and jackbusses from The BrideChamber.

Bought a second hand Waldorf Q Keyboard for 700 euro. It is the 16 voice version and it is in a good condition. I am very glad to have a keyboard with so many knobs for real time control. That's why I like my Nord Lead 1 so much. The downside is that I will have to sell my Kawai K5000R and AKAI AX80 to finance this buy.

Received the full kit for the Ian Fritz 5Pulser Waveshaper from The Bridechamber.

8th October 2008
Finished a new cabinet for MOTM format modules. The cabinet is basically the same as the Synthesizers.com cabinet apart from the height of the module mounting rails and the connectors. Here is a picture of the cabinet with the CGS Steiner filter, the Oakley Equinoxe phaser and a lot of space for future modules:

MOTM format cabinet

28th September 2008
Uploaded all the video's previously uploaded to YouTube to this web site in the original format. You can find them here.

27th September 2008
Uploaded a video with a demonstration of the Oakley Equinoxe Voltage Controlled Phaser to YouTube. You can see it here.

26th September 2008
Made a separate page for the video's previous uploaded to YouTube. Started to upload the video's in the original format which means that the audio quality is much better than on YouTube.

25th September 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. A simple theme; no keyboard wizardry here. The Synthesizers.com sound uses the Oakley Equinoxe Voltage Controlled Phaser which is modulated by a LFO, an Envelope Generator and later on by a VCO. Row 1 of the MAQ16/3 drives the DotCom, row 2 the MFM and row 3 the Creamware MiniMax (not visible). The phaser strings are produced by the Kawai K5000R, the solo by the Clavia Nord lead 1 and the rhytm by the ZOOM RhythmTrak RT-323.

18th September 2008
Uploaded a video with a demonstration of the CGS Steiner Voltage Controlled HP, LP & BP Filter to YouTube. You can see it here.

16th September 2008
Bought two second hand modules from a friendly guy who sells his MOTM format modules. The modules are:
Oakley Equinoxe (Voltage Controlled Phaser Module)
CGS Steiner Voltage Controlled HP, LP & BP Filter (CGS35)

A photo of the two modules:

Oakley and CGS module

Currently I am out of cabinet space so I have to build a new rack for these modules and for the ordered 5Pulser WaveShaper.

15th September 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. Just an improvisation which I wanted to share with you. The MFM Modular does the bass line, the Synthesizers.com Modular the accompanying sequence, the ZOOM RT-323 the drums and the AKAI AX80 together with the Kawai K5000R the solos and the chords.

1st September 2008
Ordered a full kit for the Ian Fritz 5Pulser Waveshaper at The Bridechamber. I want to expand with modules and they have a good selection of complete kits. I ordered the kit as a trail to see what the total costs are and what the quality is of the kits.

30th August 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. This time I recorded the video and audio with different applications. But I noticed the video is not as smooth as it should be. Row 1 of the MAQ16/3 has an 8 step sequence for the 2 modular's. Row 3 transposes the sequence on row 1. Row 2 drives the chord memory chords on the Akai AX80. The solo on the Nord Lead 1 has a kind of PPG like sound.

5th August 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. Somewhat different than before because I tried to do some close-ups and camera moves. But it is difficult doing this all alone and also trying to make some music. The Synthesizers.com sequence starts dry and then I switch on the AKAI Head Rush E2 in tape echo mode (blue device on the top right of the DotCom). You can hear how the sequence becomes alive. When I switch the connect switch on the Q124, the CV of row 1 of the MAQ16/3 is connected to the 1V/Oct of the Q107. Row 1 drives the DotCom and the MFM. Row 2 drives the Nord Lead 1 which 2nd VCO is detuned 5 semitones down to simulate chords. Row 3 adds 2 semitones to row 1 each 8 steps. The solo is done on the Kawai 100F.

4th August 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. The sequence is basically the same as on the video uploaded on the 2nd of August but this video is more focused on the 2 Modulars.

2nd August 2008
Uploaded a video to YouTube. You can see it here. The video starts with a slow part and halfway transform in the fast part. The Kawai 100F is used for the solo's.

4th July 2008
Received the ordered Q108 Multiples and Q131 Blank Panel from Synthesizers.com. Also received the Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter but handed the module over to my wife because she is giving me it on my birthday.

21th June 2008
Uploaded the same video to tv.sonicstate.com. You can see it here. The advantage over YouTube is that the sound is in stereo and the quality is slightly better.

20th June 2008
Made a video with my new Logitech Pro 9000 and uploaded it to YouTube. You can see it here. Doepfer row 1 drives the Synthesizers.com (the sound at the beginning) and row 3 the MiniMax ASB (second sound and bass). The MiniMax ASB is on my left and not visible in the video. AX80 is on chord memory so I can push 1 note to get a chord. The distinct sound of the Synthesizers.com is caused by patching the saw wave of oscillator 2 to the resonance input on the Q107 filter. Oscillator 2 is FM'ed slightly by a formant LFO from the modular below the Synthesizers.com.

24th May 2008
Made another video attempt on YouTube. You can see it here. You see my little DotCom, the MFM, Doepfer MAQ16/3, Nord Lead 1 and the Zoom RT-323 doing the rhythm and from which I transpose the Modulars.

17th May 2008
Made my first video attempt on YouTube. You can see it here. You can see my little Synthesizers.com cabinet, the MFM and Doepfer MAQ16/3 in action. What you don't see is the Zoom RT-323 doing the rhythm and from which I transpose the Modulars.

16th May 2008
Ordered the following modules from Synthesizers.com:
1 x Q124 Multiples
1 x Q131 Single-Width Blank Panel
1 x Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter
The Transistor Ladder Filter I ordered for my wife so she has a present for my birthday.

14th May 2008
Ordered a Q108 Multiples and a Q131 Blank Panel at Synthesizers.com.

26th March 2008
Today the ordered Synthesizers.com modules have arrived. But my cabinet is not ready yet because I still have to do the wiring. Here a picture with the modules in the cabinet, including the Variable State Filter which I got in February. Notice that the modules have not yet been secured to the cabinet with the screws.

Synthesizers.com modules

2nd March 2008
Made a cabinet for the Synthesizers.com modules. The cabinet is 80cm wide and 20cm deep. The cabinet can contain 14 single space modules. If the ordered modules are delivered and built in there is room left for 4 single space modules.

25th February 2008
Ordered the following modules from Synthesizers.com:
2 x Q106 - Oscillator with the Q106CRS (Calibrated Range Switch) option
1 x Q108 - Amplifier
2 x Q109 - Envelope Generator
1 x Q112 - 4 Channel Mixer

11th February 2008
Today I received the Synthesizers.com Q107 Variable State Filter. Connected it to the Power-One power supply and used it with my Modular to replace the current VCF. I am surprised about the sound and possibilities; using the low pass output it sounds much better (or different) than my Formant 24dB VCF. Here is a sound example where I am only altering the upper 4 knobs; as the sound source, 2 VCO's with sawtooth waveform are used with some coloured noise added.

Synthesizers.com Q107

1st February 2008
Bought a second hand Power-One HDCC-150W-AG power supply for 60 euro to provide the power for the new Synthesizers.com modules I intend to buy. I bought it because a QPS1 power supply of Synthesizers.com would cost me around 275 dollar because of the additional import duties and the high shipping costs because of the weight.

14th January 2008
Last year I have build a basic Modular that I am very pleased with. This year I want to expand the Modular with some commercial modules. I have chosen for Synthesizers.com because the modules have the right size for me, they are ready made and relatively cheap. It may be that the quality of MOTM, Oakley, Blacet, Modcan, etc. modules is better but these modules are too expensive for me. Furthermore I can not judge on the quality of the modules of the various vendors because I have never had the opportunity to try any of the modules so I am not able to compare them side by side. Perhaps I will buy some MOTM or Oakley modules later on to get some variation in the modules. Today I ordered my first module at Synthesizers.com. The module is the Q107 Variable State Filter which I can use right away with my current Modular.

Bought a second hand Akai AX80 for 300 euro. It is in a good condition but I have to clean the keyboard; 2 keys are not responding like they should.  After cleaning the keyboard, the internals and the displays, this AX80 is in top shape again. Already own a Akai AX73 which I want to sell, now I have the AX80. Really like the AX80 keyboard action which is better than the AX73's.
